L’Herbier national : mémoire des jardins disparus by Marc JEANSON – Château de Bénouville

The National Herb Garden: in memory of bygone gardens

This conference will illustrate just how the national herb garden and its 8 million specimens preserves, not only the plant memory of our world, but also sometimes moving reminders of lost gardens and gardeners.

Marc Jeanson

Marc Jeanson, an engineer in agronomy, graduated from the Paris-Grignon National Agronomy Institute and is also a botanist and doctor in plant systems at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and the New York Botanical Garden (United States). His doctoral thesis, which he presented in 2011, focuses on a group of palm trees from Southeast Asia.
Thanks to several experiments out in the field and on different continents, he has gained excellent knowledge of tropical flora. Co-organiser and joint scientific director of the Rencontres Botaniques (Botanic Encounters) in Varengeville, he regularly works in partnership with stakeholders from the world of gardens, acting – in particular – as associate commissioner of the ‘Jardins’ exhibitions held in the Grand Palais in Paris from the 15th to the 24th of July 2017.
He is the author, not only of several scientific publications, but also of support material for specialists and the public alike, including ‘Botaniste’, recently published by Grasset. Since 2013, Marc Jeanson has been in charge of the national herb garden collections at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris.
