The Jardin de Boulogne, a conservatory of Belle Époque horticultural art
During the 1890s, Albert Kahn undertook to create a garden that would gradually, throughout its composition, reveal the horticultural styles that were in vogue in the late 19th century. Hence, all the great wealth and the variety of “Fin de siècle” garden art were exhibited to render the Boulogne estate a genuine “conservatory of Belle Époque garden art”. Yet, the park is not just a showcase of the landscape art that was much coveted in the 1900s, it is also a reflection of the banker’s personality. Indeed, Kahn personally designed a quite singular and authentic garden, to which he offered specific identity and character.
Sigolène Tivolle
Sigolène Tivolle is a garden art historian. After passing her Master’s Degree at the University of Paris IV-Sorbonne in 2001, on the subject of medieval gardens, she studied for another Master’s Degree in “Historic gardens, heritage and landscapes” at the ENSA (National School of Architecture) in Versailles, in 2002. She worked as an historic researcher on the Albert-Kahn garden in Boulogne till 2013, before joining the “Green heritage coordination and valorisation” unit at the Hauts-de-Seine Council.
