Gardens’ Inventory

The main purpose of the current inventory of historic gardens, developed by the Centro de Ecologia Aplicada (CEABN) of Instituto Superior de Agronomia in cooperation with the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes (IEJP), is to create a research and archive platform of Portuguese gardens and parks, while contributing with Portuguese information to the European gardens’ database in development by IEJP.

The Portuguese database includes over 729 Portuguese gardens, all georeferenced and with full information indispensable for their identification. The gardens are divided in nine main regions: Norte, Porto, Centro, Tejo/Oeste, Lisboa, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira and Açores and the database is regularly updated.

The database was designed by the researchers of Maison de Recherche of the University of Caen, with a multilingual and dynamic research interface and an advanced search engine. The database is user friendly and useful to professionals, investigators, students and the general public.

The information was introduced in the database by Filipe Amaral, Luísa Correia, Joana Martinho, Raquel Carvalho, Sara Costa, João Crisóstomo and Leonor Ferreira between 2014 and 2016 and validated by Cristina Castel-Branco, the Portuguese representative of the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes.

Information about the Azores gardens was introduced in 2018 by Mariana Andrade and Ricardo Cruz and validated by Isabel Albergaria (Azores University) and Cristina Castel-Branco, Portuguese representative of the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes.
