The Inventaires et Archives des parcs et jardins de France (Inventories and Archives of the Parks and Gardens of France) website, published by the MRSH (Caen University Research Centre for Humanities and Social Sciences) – Pôle du Document numérique is aimed at offering a census of all public and private inventory sources and archives pertaining to the art of gardens.

1,289 archive notices (stable but incomplete database). These archive notices have been established based on the Guide des sources relatives à l’histoire des parcs et jardins (Guide on sources pertaining to the history of parks and gardens) compiled from 2011 to 2014 by the French interministerial archive department, thanks to funding from the Fondation des Parcs et Jardins de France (French Foundation of Parks and Gardens) and the Fondation Florence Gould. Editing was coordinated by Mrs Flore de Javel. Contributors towards the guide include: the French National Archives, the National Archives of the World of Work (Roubaix), the National Overseas Archives (Aix-en-Provence), 71 archive departments at département level, 69 archive departments at commune level, 6 regional archive departments and 5 other heritage institutions.

13,835 inventory notices of which 1,676 benefit from a detailed description with photographs. These inventory notices originate from the CPFJ (Committee of Parks and Gardens of France) and from the report entitled, État des lieux des inventaires parcs et jardins – Rapport général (Review of park and garden inventories - General report) drafted by Xavière Desternes in 2007.

Notices, which are encoded according to EAD 2002 (currently applicable international standard for archives) are presented by region then by département and town (according to INSEE listing criteria) and, finally, by conservation body. Each French département benefits from a regularly updated inventory, the European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes relying on a network of volunteers who continually enhance existing inventories.

Thanks to a dynamic consultation interface and to advanced search tools, the database can be accessed by professionals, researchers, avid amateurs or simple enthusiasts. The primary aim is for the Inventaires et Archives des parcs et jardins de France website to become a reference, thanks both to the wealth of information it contains and to its easy access.
