Parcs et jardins publics dans l’Orne du XIXe siècle à nos jours, entre patrimoine et création par Bénédicte DUTHION – Caen (France)
Public parks and gardens in Orne, from the 19th century to the present day
In this 60th anniversary year of the general cultural heritage inventory, this ‘adventure of the mind’, initiated by the art historian André Chastel (1912-1990) and of the former French minister for culture, André Malraux (1901-1976), we can but conclude that gardens have not been a priority subject in the grand scheme of knowledge on heritage of all sorts. The development of the notion of heritage itself, then the national campaign to draw a pre-inventory of gardens referred to as ‘remarkable’, have gradually led inventory departments to take gardens, and the study thereof, into account. Such is the case in Normandy, where a themed regional inventory of public parks and gardens (19th – 21st centuries) is underway. This conference will present those located in Orne, by offering insights into the method, and by proposing a test on typology, whilst unveiling some superb discoveries.
