History, inventory and the latest news on sylvan theatres in France and throughout the world
After an introduction what was behind the creation of a network of sylvan theatres, a presentation will be made via the projection of archives and photographs: A brief historic summary, a review of the typology of the different layouts of sylvan theatres and similar infrastructures, an overview of the latest news and events in sylvan theatres, the network’s projects and partners.
Nathalie Deguen
Nathalie Deguen is vice president of the association Les Amis de Saint Marcel de Félines, based in the eponymous a château and estate located near Saint Etienne and home to a “sylvan theatre network” section. This associative network, which she coordinates along with Marie-Caroline Thuillier, is behind the inventory of sylvan theatres.
Marie-Caroline Thuillier
Marie-Caroline Thuillier is an art historian specialising in historic gardens. Her studies at the National School of Architecture in Versailles and her one-year experience in Italy (where she worked on a 19th century Venetian garden), offered her excellent training in a number of landscape heritage intervention techniques and knowledge on how to render historic research accessible for on-site expertise. With Nathalie Deguen, she co-wrote an article entitled “Le théâtre de verdure comme art topiaire” (The sylvan theatre as a topiary art) published in the EBTS association’s journal Buis et Topiaires in December 2013. And in April 2013, she wrote the article “Les théâtres de verdure sous les feux de la rampe” (Sylvan theatres in the limelight), in the Demeure Historique, Côté Jardins magazine.
