L’Europe et le jardin chinois by Che Bing CHIU – Château de Bénouville
Europe and the Chinese garden
Che Bing Chiu
Born in Hong Kong in 1955, Che Bing Chiu is an architect and lecturer at the National School of Architecture of Versailles. He is a member of the Paris-Sorbonne Centre for Research on the Far East and of other research centres on traditional architecture and gardens in China. The architect designed a 1.5-hectare garden in the Domaine de Chaumont sur Loire, “Hualu, Ermitage-sur-Loire”, representing the traditional symbols of the ancestral art of Chinese gardens, which he strives to portray via his modern creations. He believes that the modern challenge of a Chinese garden consists in successfully overcoming the constraints set by tradition, whilst drawing inspiration from classical culture, hence offering a renewed formal and spatial image of the architectonic vocabulary of the landscaped area. His book Jardins de Chine ou la quête du paradis was awarded the Prix Redouté in the historic book category, and the Prix René Pechère in Brussels.
