Jardins et civilisations : approches historiques et contemporaines – Château de Bénouville
Gardens and civilizations: historical and contemporary perspectives
To the extent that they constitute an attempt to appropriate and order the world, gardens are often seen as middle ground between nature and culture as well a space that materializes man’s connection to self and other.
As part of the “Gardens” research project spearheaded by the Sorbonne Paris Cité research cluster and its partners — the University of São Paulo in Brazil and the Normandy-based European Institute for Gardens and Landscapes –, the Château de Bénouville will host a conference on the relationship between gardens and the (much debated and contested) concept of “civilization.” More specifically, the twelve participants (all French or Brazilian scholars) will explore the many ways in which gardens can communicate the intellectual, spiritual, and aesthetic values that characterize different civilizations, as well as the role played by gardens in the construction of these civilizations.
A revised version of all papers will be featured in the “Gardens and Societies” book series published by Valenciennes University Press (PUV).
