Garden and literature, elective affinities
The garden has always borne the trace and the place of man within nature. Designed in the Middle Ages in reminiscence of the lost Garden of Eden, elaborated during the Renaissance over perspectives and fountains in a harmony that sets the scene for a dialogue between man and nature, it was then formalised in the form of the ‘French garden’, later to be left untamed, proliferating, disorderly over the Romantic period. Literature has seized these gardens as the outlines of moral, intellectual and political landscapes: whether through novel or poetry, authors have repeatedly sought inspiration in these places that offer a mirror to the portraits they draw…
