Le Grand Jardin de La Roche-Guyon. Episode maraîcher d’un Potager-fruitier des Lumières – La Roche-Guyon (France)
The Great Garden in La Roche-Guyon. The market garden days of a vegetable-fruit garden from the Enlightenment
From 1925 to 1968, the Bertheaume family made use of the vegetable-fruit garden at the château. They call it the great garden, a place for work but also for life, in which gardeners pose before the camera of a family photographer. Some of these family pictures offer a glimpse of the tasks, gestures and tools employed by gardeners and growers. They tell us the story of the family by unveiling a share of these intimate moments, but they also tell the underlying tale of History, via sometimes discreet details. Complementary aerial photographs illustrate how the outline and the varieties grown here changed over the century until the garden was left fallow. They all offer an insight into the market gardening episode of a vegetable-fruit garden from the Enlightenment.
