Aventures végétales, de l’insouciance à la liberté encadrée – La Roche-Guyon (France)
Plant adventures, from nonchalance to contained liberty
This exhibition will present the history of plants via a double approach – that of its free temporal and spatial adventure, and that of its more recent total or partial infeudation by man.
Presented in a line of exhibition rooms, it will cover the following subjects: the plant adventure studied on a geological scale, the domestication of plants of use to man, the new outlook on the plant world as from the Italian Renaissance with the creation of the first botanic gardens, the techniques developed to transport living plants (from the 17th century to the 1960s), the compilation of plant collections and the specialisation of plant growing among colonial empires as from the mid 19th century, the modern period and its new vision of the living world.
Furthermore, given the presence of two 18th century Chinese wallpapers at the Château de La Roche-Guyon, representing Chinese flora and its trade, the exhibition will specifically study European knowledge and perception of this flora in the 18th and 19th centuries.
