Irrigation in historic parks and gardens

This conference is devoted, firstly, to historic irrigation methods in parks and gardens, and traditional agriculture, then to present-day and forward-looking technologies. When is it pertinent to revive historic irrigation systems and when is it pertinent to use modern systems? How can the preservation of monument-gardens rely on concepts of climatic adaptation such as sponge cities*, and what are the limitations of such concepts? What consequences do issues on future water supply have on historic garden preservation? Beyond studying these questions, current approaches and considerations regarding irrigation in historic parks and gardens will be explained with support from modern examples of practical monument and garden preservation.

*A sponge city (or haimian chengshi) is a permeable city, a type of resilient city capable of absorbing rainwater in the soil and in wetlands, in order to regulate urban flooding and to reduce vulnerability during periods of drought.
