Inventaire général et protection au titre des monuments historiques : comment restituer le jardin par la description, le dessin et la photographie ? – Montpellier (France)

General inventory and protection as a historic monument: how to reproduce a garden through description, drawings and photography

Described by the Florence Charter as ‘an architectural composition whose constituents are primarily vegetal and therefore living, which means that they are perishable and renewable’, the garden is a sometimes disconcerting, always specific field of study.
An acknowledged element of heritage since the early 1980s, knowledge of gardens has been somewhat enhanced since the first garden pre-inventories. The French Ministry for Culture’s heritage department, together with those in charge of general inventories at regional level, focus on this subject of study through different approaches.
The aim of these study days is to reflect on modalities for the study and reproduction of gardens. Via its descriptions, drawings, mapping and photography, how can we render, not only all the dimensions and components of a garden, but also its ‘temporal thickness’.
Methodological aspects, case studies and garden reproduction studies in different French regions, including Occitania, will be approached.
This event is organised by the French Ministry for Culture, the Occitania Regional Council and the Inventaire des Parcs et Jardins, reuniting several regions.
