L’Observatoire des arbres® by Stéphanie LANGEVIN – Rouen (France)
The Tree Observatory
As the companions of landscapes and their inhabitants, trees meander their way through our human perceptions. Through their presence and their variations, not forgetting their roles in the ecosystem, these sacred or age-old trees are our friends. Observing and describing this great diversity of species, ages, aspects and situations, and sharing associated knowledge, is a genuine challenge towards accompanying benevolent and collective protection and conservation in line with the tree’s life cycle. Initiated and created by the Manche C|A.U.E (council on architecture, urban planning and the environment), the Observatoire des arbres® was born from shared methodologies, practice and renewed expectations with regard to inventories and certification projects. The observatory is also part of a collaborative approach engaged by the Collectif de l’Observatoire des Arbres to serve territories, via the creation of local observatories and an interdepartmental observatory. The observatory contributes at root level via a shared participative publication. Then comes the movement of the tree itself – through moderation and inventory, the vibrant community of trees that occupies our living environment, takes us on the road to acknowledgment and respect.
Stéphanie Langevin
Landscaper-Consultant for the Manche C|A.U.E (council on architecture, urban planning and the environment), she cooperates with the Manche Tree Observatory in association with other observatories in La Réunion, Ain, Val d’Oise and Seine-Saint-Denis, all of which are part of the Observatoire de Arbres® matrix, the initiation and creation of which was assisted by the team from the Manche C|A.U.E. She shares an outlook on wooded heritage in the department of Manche, via action to increase awareness, and to offer educational support and consultancy to local authorities and the general public, and to expert professionals and specialists in arboriculture and tree care and pruning. Co-correspondent with Daniel Krakowski for the A.R.B.R.E.S. Association, her sensitivity stems from the observation of trees through successive inventories of the funeral yews and remarkable trees of the department of Manche, together with exchanges with gardeners from towns and villages, local elected representatives, tree owners and professionals in the field of our living environment: landscapers, ecologists, architects, urban planners, etc.
