Conserver et transmettre l’esprit et le sens d’un jardin historique dans ses dimensions à la fois monumentales et vivantes – Freÿr (Belgium)
Preserving and transmitting the spirit and meaning of a historic garden in its monumental and living dimensions
The word “meaning” must be understood in a broad sense: not just the codes and symbols that may be found in gardens, not just their original design but, more broadly, the understanding of a garden in its economic, philosophical and biological context, and its evolution from its origins to the present day.
While the meaning of the garden must of course be preserved, how can we avoid the pitfall of a historical reconstruction in the strict sense, which would transform it into a museum object, depriving it of its ‘living’ essence?
As a result, what methods of intervention can be envisaged in the face of change, and how can we design a “landscape project” that respects the history and spirit of the site?
How can we preserve the spirit and values of the site in its monumental and plant components?
