Alain Richert is a landscaper. He lives near Sées, in Orne. He started studying medicine, before focusing on modern art, calligraphy, photography and video, during the first half of the 1970s. He then pursued his personal work on the natural sciences, developing an increasing and everlasting interest in gardens. He has, for over thirty years, striven to reconcile history of art, science and gardens. To date, seven of the private gardens he has designed that are open to the public have been awarded the “Jardin Remarquable” (remarkable garden) quality label: the Donjon de Ballon in Sarthe, the Labyrinthe aux Oiseaux (Jardin des Cinq Sens) in Yvoire, La Guyonnière Deux Sèvres, the Parks and Gardens of Thoiry, the gardens of the Château de Mondalazac, Le Domaine du Bois Orcan and Le Grand Courtoiseau. He works for public authorities and for private clients who decide to open their gardens to the public. He has been a lecturer at the ENSP (National Graduate School of Landscape) in Versailles for over twenty years and explores gardening methods that are based on enhancing environments both in France and abroad (creation of 40 hectares of hills in Thoiry). He is also the author and translator of several books and articles and acts as a consultant for television programmes.
