Jardins d’Asie – Paris (France)

Asian Gardens

Driven by an essential quest for harmony to ‘be one with the sky’, garden art in Asia involves the spectacular and idealised creation of nature. From the Mughal garden in India to Japan, via China, each of these countries has offered its own particularly significant and original contribution to this art, which this exhibition promises to explore via a vast selection of eighty works from the museum’s collections (Indian miniatures, prints, photographs, textile and ceramic). Princely or imperial gardens, Buddhist temple gardens, gardens of Confucian literary figures, tea gardens, gardens dreamt of by poets, from Lahore to Kyoto… typological and aesthetic distinctions abound. Climatic constraints, cultural singularities and historic evolution are among the many elements that invite us to engage in a comparative reflection on Asian gardens. The event will focus on three essential themes in Asian garden art.
