Le Jardin des Tuileries. Regard et paysages. Jardin à la française et image, quels points communs ? by Hervé BERNARD – Château de Bénouville

The Jardins des Tuileries. View and landscapes. Formal garden and image, what common denominators?

To produce a landscape, one must remain totally still, fix one’s eyes, outline a site i.e. take a specific viewpoint, in order to create a whole using a frame and an optical focal length to govern perspective. To produce or restore a garden, one must also choose the viewpoint that will in turn govern an overall landscape. So perhaps working on a garden from a gardener or a photographer’s point of view are far more similar activities than one would think? This conference will be illustrated by extracts from 30 years of photography of the Jardin des Tuileries by Hervé Bernard, a project entitled “Aux Tuileries, les statues bougent!” (At the Tuileries, statues move!”) and sponsored by the Fondation des Parcs et Jardins de France (French Foundation of Parks and Gardens).

Hervé Bernard, AKA “RVB” is a “picture maker” according to Peter Knapp. He considers his profession as one that stretches well beyond simply capturing what’s inside his viewfinder. His quest is to give meaning to the testimonies he observes. He does not reproduce reality. He recreates it, plunging into its roots, anticipating its change; he lets it surge into our consciousness inventing a world that is ours.  He abolishes the frontiers between illustrated report and visual creation; between set and animated image, to inspire us with a new perception of the world. Exhibitions and publications throughout Europe, a short film presented at the Cannes film Festival, photographs among the collections of six French museums, member of the jury of the Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist in 2009, a prize awarded by the CST during the Cannes Film Festival’s official competition.
