Le catalogue des sculptures des Jardins de Marly by Geneviève Bresc-Bautier – Paris (France)
The Marly Gardens sculpture catalogue
The Château de Marly was the exceptional creation that marked the end of the reign of Louis XIV and of his first architect, Jules Hardouin-Mansart, up to his death in Marly in 1708. His garden, a place for pleasure and delectation, with its groves and fountains, was adorned with large sculptures commissioned from leading artists including Coysevox, the Coustou family and an array of other artists who worked on the decor for the chapel in Versailles and that of the park at the end of his reign. When the castle pavilions disappeared and the park was deprived of its decorative statues, the work of the most famous sculptors was admired at the Louvre or the Tuileries Garden. On the occasion of the publication of the catalogue of the Marly Gardens’ sculptures within France’s public collections, it appears fitting to pay homage to this bygone masterpiece that was Louis XIV’s last creation.
