The Garden Earth: ethical and aesthetic challenges
Current ecological preoccupations and the climatic urgency we are facing invite us to consider the notion of the ‘Garden Earth’, for our planet can also be seen as a shared garden.
Artists – not only contemporary – have seized the theme to propose their ‘artistic solutions’. The question here is to determine whether art can/should play a role in this field. Relying on iconographic material, these conferences will present various original gardening approaches and practices, based on the examples of Land Art and Third Landscape, together with an art form inspired by ecological criteria: ‘Eco-Art’.
After a brief retrospective on garden history, the aim is to consider the ‘gardening’ model as a way of living on Earth. The first conference will focus on contemporary works by ‘artist gardeners’ who portray the garden as a prime site for reflecting on the relationship between ethical and aesthetic.
