Les jardins ouvriers, du paternalisme au développement by Hugo Legoff – Nogent-sur-Marne (France)
Allotments, from paternalism to sustainable development
This conference and exchange will propose a retrospective look at the emergence of allotment gardens. These gardens are strongly linked to the Industrial Revolution and the resulting urban development. We shall retrace their story, from the paternalistic attitude of industrialists towards labourers, to the democratisation of their usage. For, in a context of urban consolidation, demand among city dwellers for associative gardens has escalated (multiple roles: nourishment, educational, social, etc.). From the need for food to that of a minimum of free space, of ‘green space’, per inhabitant, associative and shared gardens have now proven their legitimacy. Yet, they struggle to survive in the long term, and still suffer from their origins, which relegate them to a marginal status, whilst being perceived by the urban economy and political powers as available land.
Conference organised on the occasion of the La banlieue côté jardin (garden suburbs) exhibition.
In partnership with the Parcs et Jardins 94 association and the MJC (youth club) in Nogent-sur-Marne.
