Les pépinières Baumann : pionniers de l’horticulture en Europe – Colmar (France)
The Baumann nurseries: Europe’s horticulture pioneers
Conference proposed by Cécile Modanèse-Roth, doctor in history, in charge of the Neuenbourg culture and tourism centre and of the Land of art and history/culture/tourism for the Guebwiller region community of communes.
In the 18th century, Jean Baumann founded a fruit tree nursery in Bollwiller which became a major horticultural establishment in the 19th century, renowned well beyond the frontiers of the Alsace region. Handed down over several generations, the enterprise spurred new planting fashions that metamorphosed romantic gardens.
