Saint-Cloud : renaissance d’un grand domaine by Sylvie GLASER – Château de Bénouville

Saint-Cloud, the birth of a great estate

The destruction of the Château de Saint-Cloud around which stood the gardens and grand park accelerated the estate’s dismantling and gradually led to a loss of transparency. Successive listings as a protected natural site and historic monument bear witness, if required, to the ecological and cultural importance of this former royal estate. From the inevitable modern usage that has developed there to the constraints associated with preservation, the paradox that regularly faces cultural and natural site managers is equally the case in Saint-Cloud, accentuated by the site’s sheer size and its proximity with France’s capital city.  So what currently forms the basis of its value in terms of heritage? How can we render the site more appreciable to the general public whose expectations are as numerous as they are contradictory? What strategic approach and what goals should this ambition encompass? How can we fittingly translate these challenges in the park’s requalification and maintenance?

Sylvie Glaser

She later took over management of the Saint-Cloud national estate as administrator till 2013.
