A Renaissance style garden: the Grand Jardin in Joinville (Haute Marne). Yesterday, today and tomorrow
What were the circumstances around the work aimed at creating a Renaissance style garden alongside the Château du Grand Jardin in Joinville in the 1990s? What were the available documents, existing on-site traces, sources of inspiration? The new garden was composed of a general plan which was largely reproduced and included both restored and created-recreated features. The desire to reproduce elements that were characteristic of 16th century gardens was associated with the quest to preserve those that bear essential witness to garden evolution over the centuries.
Hence, new flower beds of Renaissance inspiration were integrated within the landscaped garden – since reorganised – as if to gently reveal two radically different garden design models.

Aline Le Coeur
The landscape architect and State landscaper-advisor, Aline Le Coeur obtained a DEA diploma in Gardens and Historic Landscapes (Versailles) and has coordinated a number of studies and sites in association with chief architects for the French Historic Monuments department: the parks and castle of Joinville (Haute Marne), La Motte-Tilly (Aube), Azay-le-Rideau (Indre et Loire), Compiègne (Oise), Rambouillet (Yvelines), Jean-Jacques Rousseau park in Ermenonville (Oise) and the Villa Cavrois park in Croix (Nord). Based on knowledge of historic sources, compared with on-site realities, the project evaluates modifications in intelligence and respect for the spirit of the place, in a constant quest for economy of means, whilst guaranteeing its longevity.
Laurence Baudoux
Laurence Baudoux is a university lecturer at the University of Artois (Arras) with an HDR certification to direct research work in the history of art. Her work focuses on architecture, decoration and gardens (16th-18th centuries).
