Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell (1750-1823) and his works: from historical to topical

Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell was the leading German gardener of his generation. His studies in Schwetzingen, France and England enabled him to develop an international network. As a gardener of the prince-elector’s court and, since 1804, intendant for the court of Bavarian gardens, as well as private missions, Sckell realised a great number of important gardens. As a prudent urban planner, he established the bases of the extension of Munich as a city of royal residence. The landscaped garden and the redevelopment of the gardens at the Nymphenburg Palace are keys works of his Munich phase. With classically beautiful ‘images of nature’, Sckell designed landscaped gardens that were distinguishable by their vast dimensions, sophisticated spatial development and an approach that was respectful of existing features.
This colloquium will take advantage of the bicentennial of Sckell’s death to present novel aspects of research into the history of gardens and present-day challenges with regard to garden preservation.
This event is organised by the Bayerischen Verwaltung der Staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen (Bavarian Administration of Castles, Gardens and Lakes) and the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte, München (Munich Central Institute of Art History). In partnership with the Gärten der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Gartenkunst und Landschaftskultur (German Society of Garden Art and Landscape Culture).
