Le Comte de Choulot paysagiste novateur, comprendre et restaurer les parcs anciens by Benoît de Choulot – Château de Bénouville
The Count of Choulot is among the leading landscapers of the 19th century. He left a decisive mark on the history of gardens through his new method, which he describes in ‘L’Art des Jardins’. Considered as an exceptional landscaper, he designed over 280 parks in France and abroad. We will discover this captivating and highly committed figure, then, via an overview of his original method, will note that it perfectly applies to present-day ecological needs. The majority of French parks are in great need of attention; but what is the best attitude to adopt today faced with this heritage we hope to restore, improve or preserve? Taking over a park, the creator of which is known or not, is a delicate affair. The living material it comprises is precious, and must not be manhandled. To succeed, we must, first and foremost, understand this heritage, analyse its strengths and weaknesses. Then a realistic strategy, adapted to the human and financial resources we can engage, can emerge.
