Le domaine de Richelieu à Rueil-Malmaison : un jardin conçu comme une féérie by Denis GUEURET – Archives du Calvados
The Domaine de Richelieu in Reuil-Malmaison : a garden designed like a fairytale
Richelieu had transformed the estate of the Château du Val de Ruel into one of the finest gardens of the 17th century. The estate, which the cardinal took to its apogee, can be seen as a link between the influence of Italian Renaissance in France and what was later to become the ‘à la française’ French formal garden. Furthermore, since the 19th century, recent developments on the site have unveiled a number of surprises.
Based on research conducted for the development of a new public park, this conference will propose a tour of some forgotten gardens. It will be richly enhanced by 17th-century engravings and texts, present-day vestiges and a modern interpretation of a landscape.
