Creating a sense of wonder: Le Nôtre, Fouquet and the theatre of power

At Vaux-le-Vicomte, Nicolas Fouquet, André Le Nôtre, Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun devised a new form of presentation, in which gardens and pools became a true visual spectacle. Perspectives, reflections, optical illusions… water structures the space just as much as it evokes emotion. It was also a way of asserting power.
