Landscape, gardens and health in Nice, a winter holiday resort as of the late 18th century
This conference will focus on the development of the city of Nice and its surroundings after the second half of the 18th century. It will approach the essential role of landscaping and garden conception in the region’s development, before exploring how the holiday home vogue – initially in winter – influenced the evolution of garden art on the French Riviera, Nice in particular.
An architect and garden and landscape historian (ENSP – National Graduate Landscaping School, Versailles, Marie Hérault produced a history of art doctoral thesis entitled, The Riviera, the land of eternal springtime: landscape conception and cultural transfer in Nice and its surroundings, from the Grand Tour to the present day, which she presented on 27 March 2021 (Sorbonne University, Paris IV). Associate researcher at the Centre André Chastel in Paris, she has worked as researcher on the general cultural heritage inventory, heritage archivist, and has lectured at the Côte d’Azur University. Her current research focuses on the development of coastal landscapes from the perspective of public health.
