Artists’ Gardens

Whether it be works of art installed in a garden or gardens associated with a particular artistic movement, every artistic expression finds in a chosen location a privileged setting for self-expression. Whether they create their own gardens or adorn those of others, artists have always drawn inspiration from the natural and cultural world of parks and gardens, using them as the setting that inspires their creative reflections. It is therefore essential not to separate the artwork from the place where it was conceived and created, and, where appropriate, to consider the implications for its heritage value. What approach should be adopted when it comes to conservation, protection or even restoration? What legal status should be accorded to a work of art thus associated with a garden? Is it a movable asset situated within natural, consumerist spaces? Or is it a heritage object permanently attached to inspiring gardens and landscaped sites?
