Preserving a ‘Loire Valley château’: architecture, gardens and furnishings at Valençay

The region is renowned for its châteaux, which flourished during the Renaissance when the royal court was based in the Loire Valley, some of which went on to experience varying fortunes. Although somewhat removed from the famous river, Valençay is very much part of this Loire Valley tradition and was glorified by the flamboyant diplomat Talleyrand in the first half of the 19th century. Whilst many châteaux have come down to us in a partially dismantled state, Valençay holds the appeal of a site preserved in its architectural form, along with – even more rarely – its grounds and part of its furnishings.

How were the conservation measures for this estate – which has received particular support from the DRAC Centre-Val de Loire – put in place, and how do they fit in with its development as a tourist attraction?
